The countryside is beautiful and varied from flat farmland to high moorland. Edinburgh is only about an hours drive away. Its famous castle and Holyrood Palace , theQueen's Edinburgh home, are both open to the public and there are theatres, museums, art galleries, a Zoo and Botanical gardens. The" Royal Mile" has many old houses, some from the 16th century that can be visited. Newcastle is only 20 minutes further to the South. On the coast there is Holy Island, one of the cradles of Christianity and the home of St. Cuthbert. The famous Lindisfarne Gospels came from there (they are now in the British museum in London) and in Spring there are puffins nesting on the Farne Islands which can be visited by a short boat trip. The valley of the River Tweed has many old abbeys to explore. Even the West Coast is only a day trip away.
