Mennonite Bishop Peter Burkholder and his descendants were long-time residents. The house served as an American Civil War hospital following General Sheridan's devastating “burning of the Valley" in 1864. After three unsuccessful attempts to ignite the flame-retardant locust wood foundation timbers, Union soldiers moved on. As one of the few large structures to survive the raid, the house was a natural refuge for the wounded and homeless. It is easy to forget you are minutes from downtown, the campuses of James Madison, Eastern Mennonite and Bridgewater. Skyline Drive, trout fishing, antique malls, Civil War attractions, caverns, wineries, restaurants, theaters and more are all within a short drive.
